Acclimating New Fish: The Key to a Healthy Aquarium
Bringing new fish or invertebrates into your aquarium is an exciting experience, but improper acclimation can lead to stress, illness, or even loss of your new livestock. At Nemo’s Reef, we believe that minimizing shock during this transition is critical to long-term health. That’s why we recommend using a drip acclimation method, and the Innovative Marine AccuDrip makes it easier than ever.
Why Acclimation Matters
Fish and invertebrates experience stress when exposed to sudden changes in water parameters such as:
Salinity (especially in saltwater systems)
Temperature fluctuations
pH
Oxygen levels and other water chemistry differences
The goal of acclimation is to gradually introduce them to their new environment, reducing stress and helping them adjust safely.
The Best Way to Acclimate New Fish: Drip Acclimation
One of the most effective ways to ensure a smooth transition is by using the drip acclimation method. This process slowly introduces tank water into the transport bag, giving your fish time to adjust.
What You’ll Need:
- Innovative Marine AccuDrip
- A clean container (such as a bucket or specimen box)
- A timer (or just keep an eye on the process)
Step-by-Step Guide to Drip Acclimation
1. Turn Off Aquarium Lights
Bright lights can further stress new arrivals. Keep the aquarium dimly lit for a calm transition.
2. Float the Bag for Temperature Matching (10-15 mins)
Before opening, float the sealed transport bag in your tank for 10-15 minutes. This step equalizes the temperature without exposing livestock to water parameter differences too quickly.
3. Transfer to a Separate Container
Carefully open the bag and pour its contents (fish + water) into a clean container.
4. Set Up the AccuDrip
- Place the Innovative Marine AccuDrip into your tank and start a siphon.
- Adjust the valve to the following guide:
DRIP RATE GUIDELINE:
- 1-2 Drips per second - for snails, shrimps, crabs, starfish, anemones
- 2-4 Drips per second - for majority of fish such as angels, tangs, corals
- Allow drip acclimation for 45-60 minutes, or until the water volume at least doubles.
5. Monitor & Observe
6. Transfer to Aquarium
- Gently net the fish or invertebrate and place them into your aquarium.
- Do NOT pour acclimation water into the tank.
7. Keep the Lights Dim & Avoid Feeding Immediately
Let your new fish settle in before offering food. Observe them for to ensure they adjust properly and no one is picking on the new fish.
Why We Recommend the Innovative Marine AccuDrip
If you want to simplify and perfect the acclimation process, the Innovative Marine AccuDrip is a game-changer.

We use AccuDrip in our store, and it’s the same method we trust for our own aquariums.
Final Thoughts: Acclimation is Worth the Effort
Proper acclimation ensures less stress, a higher survival rate, and healthier fish in your tank. By taking the extra 45-60 minutes to introduce your new arrivals the right way, you set them up for long-term success in their new home.
