The Halloween Urchin (Tripneuste gratillas) is a type of pincushion urchin from the South Pacific Ocean found in deep water. It is also known as the Hairy Pincushion Urchin because its spines tend to go in every direction, rather than straight out from center like most pincushion urchins. They are multicolored and an attractive addition to large reef tanks, but they can scratch acrylic and wear items to camouflage themselves you may prefer they leave alone. Giving them shells to wear can reduce this tendency. Hardy for a deep water species once acclimated to their new home, they are best suited for hair algae and complex algae removal like Caulerpa species and other macroalgae. They will consume most decorative algae, and some coralline algae and that is something to be mindful of.
