Dwarf suckers, commonly known as "otos" (Otocinclus), are tiny, peaceful South American freshwater catfishes. Famous for their voracious appetite for soft green algae, they are highly popular as clean-up crews in planted community aquariums. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Key Profile & Care Requirements
- Size & Lifespan: ≈ 1.5 to 2 inches in length. They typically live for 3 to 5 years. [1]
- Diet: Primarily herbivores; they graze constantly on biofilm, soft algae, and supplemental foods like blanched zucchini, spinach, and algae wafers. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
- Schooling: Highly social. They must be kept in groups of at least 6 or more of their own kind.
- Tank Size: Minimum of 10-20 gallons, heavily planted with plenty of hiding spots and smooth surfaces to graze on. [1, 2, 3]
Tank Mates
Because of their peaceful nature and small size, they are safe for community tanks. They pair excellently with other peaceful nano fish such as tetras, rasboras, celestial pearl danios, and freshwater shrimp. Avoid housing them with large, aggressive fish that may view them as a snack.
